When Fender restyles a bass, they often take it into a whole new direction. Such is the case with the ‘57 Fender Precision. The changes to this bass would reverberate through the years, solidifying the Fender Precision bass guitars’ place in the hearts and minds of bass players all over the world. After a few years of Telecaster inspired ‘51 style P-Bass, Fender changed the game when they restyled the P-Bass to resemble their new, super cool Stratocaster guitar.
The now world famous Fender Headstock was first introduced to the Precision Bass in 1957, matching the Stratocaster
The headstock took on the now famous profile you see in the Fender Bass line today, and the neck heel was replaced from the square shape to a rounder heel. The original ‘57 P-Bass pick guard was made from a single layer of gold anodized aluminum with 10 screw holes, making the electronics housing much more stable. The single coil pickup was replaced with new, humbucking mode split-coil with staggered pole pieces, which greatly reduced the magnetic “hum” found in the previous version.
Original 57 P-Basses might be a bit more abundant for collectors, but are none the less prized because of its seminal place Fender history. Most originals are valued between $15,000.00 to $21,000.00 US.
